Powdersnow-Season - 2009-2010

Post by Schneewurm » Thursday 15 October 2009, 19:32

What a great start to the powdersnow this winter again!
Pre-winter brought some nice snowfalls over East Europe, so I decided to take my snowboard for going freeriding today. Sure, no lifts are running everyvere - even not the lifts on the picture of this dedicated freeride-resort, so I had to walk up on this mountain snow landscape.
A landscape free of any glacier-gaps. Remember glacier-gaps should just be refilled now with snow and not with tourists!

(Pict 1 on about 1900 meters, Pict 2 2300 meters.)

@benttech
ask Felix, he should know it! He rode once just beside this forest some downhills and slept less then 1000 meter away of the place where first pictures was taken.

Yes, it was a great start to winter. Snow was an extra light powder - billions of snow-crystals tooks me to a glimmer world of wintertime. I was sinking in with my big snowshoes many time down to my knees and sometime also down to my hip. I put on bevor the snowflake baskets (Tiefschnee-Tourenteller) on my poles, but even they felt like nothing then a tip on my poles!

We have been about 3 or 4 persons there on snow on a bigger area. One was an athlete from Swiss Nordic ski team (speedwalking with snowshoes), an other person was a student doing his practice/diploma about permafrost on SLF (Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research). He was following me with his mountaineering skis.

This was in October?!
Nice start man!!
I hope this keeps up for you.
In Western Canada, we got some early season snow, but now, it's warm again so I hope it doesn't mess up the snowpack with a weak base layer.

Has anyone an idea, whats a good thing to do after lunch on a grey Sunday afternoon like today? Sure, just riding on powder snow!

Now adays it's a good choice to turn to some resorts they have still open their gondolas and chairlifts for hiking tourists. So we choose a station with an extra amount of new fluffy powdersnow and an extra offer of Euro 3.33.- a ticket, for all you can ride on the lifts the whole day.
Starting on 950 meters over see level (picture 1) to the middle station on 1550 meters (picture 2), gave us a nice shift of snowhigh too! Of course only a view hiking tourists have been there, but that doesn't matter for us! Our focus was another one!

Sure, that was on only the half at the high and less of a 1/10 of the price, like You have on shiny Glaciers like e.g. in Soelden, but as an authentic snowboarder I can also have fun on a 1/20 of the value, compared to other stations.

If I watch the pictures, I couldn't belive it myself! But Yes its true, I took them some hours ago! (same place like Yesterday Sunday)

Today it was the first day of season 2009-2010 for to go by a swallowtail-board - only one ride after a longer uphill by snowshoes - but even what a great feeling!

Hello denis,
the photos are taken in the mountains of Switzerland. The Peak on the last picture is about 2150 meters over the bottom of the valley, whitch was also coverd with snow. The whole high can be watched at once, some dozens meters behind the snowboard.
As we went to that place, it was a exceptional switch from late summer / early autumn to wintertime.
First we travel between green trees with a vew coloured trees, after a gallery / tunnel of about 1 mile, we enter to an all white valley.

Today I have watched the all white mountains from far away. They looks realy very nice. They are coverd from about 900 meters and up all in white with a deep green scene below 900 meters. But now a hot wind is drying them and the snow melts away. We have now about +4° at midnight on 2100 meters and +6° in early morning there. Freezing level was today at 3300 or 3600 meters. So I was jogging this evening at +18° with minimal clothes on, like in summertime.

Hi Rob Stevens,
Yes I was now some days on snow in mid of October. But as usual the snow will dissapear up to about 2000 meters. So before snowfalls of late November, we will have a good time for hiking. It's similiar like on Banff National Park, no tourist at all yet. So we can hike now hours too, without to see any other peoples.

@ joemzl
Aha, Pischa, did You hike there. It's a nice place isn't it. The Glacier is right about 2-2.5 km to walk from a bus-stop of Fluela for to go Snowboarding the whole Year (about 4.5 km directline from the place of photos). Well, the bus comes only once every hour, so there is the needness to choose the right time, to go/be back on bus-stop.

New fluffy powdersnow was falling and many skiresorts are on progress to prepare for the openings of Saturday. But today weather was fine, at Saturday it will be ???

harald was talking here from a realy good idea what people like e.g. Santa Claus should be do in such cases: To ride on a powderboard!
I think far away from any Glacier without dangerous gaps, that would be realy a great thing to do now: riding in extra fluffy powdersnow reaching in average up to the hip. (picture 1) No doing-all was desirable - just right doing-one-thing!

So we have seeking for a tiny cable-car, on most impressive mountains deep in the hearth of Switzerland (picture 2 - board-sign-cablecar, please duck head if cablecar comes up), serving each time a plus of 600 m of high in only 6 minutes - so every 15 minutes 600 m of powdersnow-downhill can be done on a wide area like double to tripple of Rettenbach glacier area (and steeper in avg.). First cablecar starts 7 a.m. in the dark, last cablecar starts 6 p.m. in the dark, a realy great thing compared to opening hours of other resorts. Well, cablecar is only suitable for some persons at 80 kg each, (board/ boots/ clothes incl.!!) Limited weight of transportation and capacity! Absolutly too tiny for mass of orginal super tourists. Otherwise I was asket by the postman on lower station to bring up the post-bundle (letters & newspappers) to the people on upper station - a realy authentic scene of trust between people of the mountains. Things like that never will happen on high performance wintersports resorts like Davos, Sölden ....
Beside that, the closed Restaurant has open for me for lunchtime, realy a kindness of the people there.

Resum: No slopes at all on whole area - no tourists at all on whole area - a wide deep powdersnow-only resort - We just call it a "privat powdersnow resort" - stressless powder snoboarding all the day - just only a guranteed basic needness of any authentic snowboarders in Switzerland, nothing else than that.

Well, I guess you had to insert some coins for each run...

Or is this lift running for residents with a key?
