Was it a summer fairy-tale - or just a summer night dream?
Hey volks, I'm just back at this time from snowboarding! (About 02:00 h in the night)
Does anyone imagine how it is to put one's hands into fresh all white new snow?
But of course without making any pollution of CO² for preventing our earth-climate, reaching the fields on about 2000m highness only by human power!
Just see the pictures from "Yesterday" evening!

Nice pics, where did you hike? Didn't know there was some fresh snow at such low altitude in the Alpes at this time of the year!

Sunset-Carving
Ahhh! I just saw here. In the last days some other poeple also have been going carving in the late evening! So I dit it too. But in contrast to a clinic cold ski-hall with artifical snow and cold artifical light, I pereferd to go to the real nature. A real nature where I can carve just wearing my cycling short and jersey. So I did my last carves just after 9:30 p.m. at sunset in a warm light, when the sun is converting to a deep red disk, like on a painted picture.
@ Hans: I was cycling and hiking to a small swiss mountain, dozens of miles away from me, which I foundet just when I'm looking out of the window of my bathroom.
The snowfield doesn't look so small from far away. Also the angulation doesn't look as flat as You can find it in ski-halls, which "steepness" is definit more orientated to the slopes on Sölden (Glacier), then on the real world. (see picture from Yesterday, about 35°).
But one thing was Yesterday for a short time realy similar like in the lift queue in Sölden!
There was a crowd of sheeps when I was hiking up. They push all time with theire nose just against my board on my back, which I was carring with my backpack, a realy troublesome thing, isn't it! But probable they do also know which are realy fine snowboards!

And now the whole story of a nice evening in snow from July 2008, without any pollution of CO²:
After some fresh summerdays with some rainfall in the flat and fresh new snow on the mountains I felt free to go snowboarding! That's just only a guaranteed natural basic requirement of authentic and free thinking Swiss poeples.
Sure, I read a Year ago, about a group of Virus related carvers, they do such scary things, like going carving in the mid of January at rainfall up to 2200 m on Silvretta Nova (2100 m) at a thin basic layer of old snow. But on my side I like more to go carving on huge layers, like meters of snow and at a nice sweet layer of fresh snow at 2100 m, in mid of July, at a calm and warm sunny day!
Unfortunately just to do this, will come more rare in future. Because of the continuous pollution of CO² earth-climate is on change. About mid af April there was about still 4 m of snow on 1600 m, now is no snow there at all, and many Glaciers will disappear to the ground in the next 20-30 Years. So I decided to go snowboarding in July without doing any pollution of CO².
It's not a unusual thing to use alternative transportation solutions for traveling in Switzerland. As you can see here (in German) or here (en Français) authentic Swiss poeple, who enjoy their country and the planet earth, are able to meet themself, at a rate off 80% of 300'000 poeple, by traveling by Train or bus, whitout any pollution of CO²! Bus? Sure, at Luzern they run as electrical driven trolley-buses, in the city and out to the suburb.
So I'm picking up last tuesday my bycicle, my snowboard and a backpack and I started after lunch-time for to go snowboarding. After a nice, but long ride throug fields of wheat and later a fresh mountain-valley, passing some waterfalls and a Christus-statue (I'm just hold on there and pray for snow) beside the street in the valley, I arrives after about 2.5-3 hours the place to change from cycling to hiking. (see pictures)
Another 2.5-3 hours climbing up the mountains to the snow has been to do. A bad thing? No-no, You see, there are thousends of poeple coming now-a-days from north, who stay in traffic jam around 3-5 hours when they are crossing the alpes. Just for sniffing to CO²-pollution of cars befor them.
I prefer more to walk throug a noiseless prairie of fresh aromatic herbs and deep coloured flowers, like alpine roses and enzian. (see picture) Instead of parking a shining car on a overfilled recreation area at the highway, or ramin a long stick board in the snow beside a snow-bar, I just paused at a lonly fountain in mid of the prairie, placed my palm in middle to a bed of alpine roses, refilled my 3 litre Camelback (and this strong jet of crystal-clear alpine-water does it in 1.5-2 seconds only !) and enjoed the nice view and flora.

Arriving at about 1900 m, the first small snowfield was there, I get in hurry to go to the next biger one, for doing the first carves. It was located on the south side and from the top I could see all the smog comming from the north. (see picture)
After an other half hour walking, I arrived at the realy nice carving-field, like You can see the pictures in the top of this thread. A fresh layer of about 10-20 cm sweet slushy snow (at that time, in the morning it was powder-snow), was blinding me and I did some verry heartily carves there. No stress at all, but a great view to other white covered rocky-wall mountains. Sure, there was also no reason for a posing in front of a lift queue, only some sheeps are looking to my carving.
After a beautyfull sunset, I had to walk down in the night, down through a dark and realy wild forest at least, for riding back on my bycicle downhill home. With 70 km/h through the darkness with my bycicle - pure fun & adrenalie!

a new sport is born - eco-triathlon - cycling/hiking/carving - free of any pollution of CO²!
(You can call it also eco-carving!)

mountains, bicycle...
wow you are the new Hermann Bühl...he used to work in austria, take his bike, do 150-200 km to the dolomites, make a first ascent of a very hard rock face, then pedal back to austria...this was all in the 50's
For those who are summer bored, i recommend reading his book: what will can make u do is there...he must be the most incredible climber besides Reinhold Messner in the XXth century

amazing first ascent of Nangat Parbat: http://www.jerberyd.com/climbing/stories/nangaparbat/

Nice, I envy your spirit.
I went to Saas Fee on wednesday, pristine conditions and fresh powder on the north face of the Allalinhorn (bout 2000m higher than your trip...). I was pretty lazy however, I took the train (with my bike) to go up, but returned home on my bike. I was lucky enough to testride the whole day a Radical Surf 222 which someone took up for me (got no board here, just boots), really a nice board for powder and soft summer snow.
Last week I though about doing all three, cycling, hiking boarding too on glacier Pleine Morte in Crans Montana, but then I decided that it would be a bit too much for one day (I live at 540m altitude in Sierre for July/August) and just cycled and hiked up and went on the snow without equipment (tears rolling.....) but it was a nice daytrip anyhow and I could escape the hot temperatures in the valley.
One gotta enjoy the last snow of the season as long as it lasts.

Aahh, You stay in Siders, so you refill your bootles of your bike with pure white-wine only?
Boarding in summertime and springtime at fresh new snow is allways one of the sweetest thing You can do. How expensive was the ski-ticket to Mittel-Allalin? Did they close at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m.?
There are also some nice sunset's on the top of Allalin (see pic. with Materhorn/Mt. Cervin on the left).
In deed, Surf 222 is a very nice Board also for carving. You can use it also well as a bridge for crossing gaps of Glacier! I felt riding with this type of board like gliding on clouds. By the way, Years ago I had to take the decision to by it or not (standing in front of this shape, labeld with a nice price, with enough Bucks in my wallet). The reason for not by, beside other minor things, was the fear of injury riding this long thing. The forces can be huge at crashes! (had some experiences!) The relasing safty-bindings (plate-binding) I ownd, was also not the ideal sulution for Surf 222, so I didm't use it on Surf 222.
Felix, You visited the famous Montreux Jazz Festival?

Mont-Blanc has the whole Year nice powdersnow, now on summertime everyday about 200-300 persons want put one's hands into it. (see pic from last summer)
no-no, I'm not like a crazy Hermann Bühl, just a normal Person like others in Switzerland.
For me there was only about less 100 k to go one way, so perhaps 170-190 k the whole day. Just have a look on Your Westside next Tuesday and Friday. There will be much more then 100 persons riding with theire bycicles 160-230 km every day (Le Tour de France). And in fact, as I was returning in the night with me board on the backpack to my bycicle, there was a second bycicle there. A more famous then mine, a swiss army bycicle, you know just one single gear, all in black, with stamp-break to the front-clincher. So I was not the only person at this day and place, who was riding up to the mountains with a bike, for going hiking. You can see it in Switzerland everywhere.
But to do such beautyfull things like I told in my story, without spend one Cent, can be also the reason why we can get "Le hemwé", You know "la maladie suisse", when we stay outside of Switzerland.
Well we have some hightech industrie for research for medicine in Switzerland, they devlop anything for any symptoms around the world, but the "la maladie suisse" will stay an uncurable thing at all.
