@ Jonas
thanks for the reply, very interesting. I knew that 4k is very rare, but I thought some more theaters would have the, considering that 70mm is well above in resolution over 4k if the copying of the films and mastering doesn't cheap out.. Not even talking about 65mm productions. It's a shame that cinemas have mostly crap equipment once it comes to projectors and screens (soon home cinemas will be better than most current commercial screens- it's really a shame). Long live the days of past Cinerama curved screen like in the Berlin Royal Palast.

As I probabely can't make it to Lausanne (except if the preiere is in July or August when I'l probabely work in Sierre) "just for a movie" I'ld be looking forward to getting a good quality dvd or Blue-Ray.

Yeah probabely the Red One would be a bit too much for me. I only used once a 16mm film camera and haven't had the time to shoot shorts like when I was at school. So for people like me an XH-A1 with good equipment (steadycams, tripods etc) will probabely rest good enough for everything I want to shot and at the same time will be easy enough to use....

I agree with Hans that you should really go on with a Blu-Ray/DVD version that you could sell.
I think we would agree to pay for it even if the price would be high according to the length of the movie.

Just my opinion...

Well if it's only 7 Minutes plus 30 Minutes making off, an Mpeg4 or H264 compression schould easily do for 1080p or 1080i resolution and be easier for those who don't yet have an Blueray player. Also Media price would be much lower.
Maybe prices halve until summer, but still very expensive and not yet mainstream.

Blue Ray...............

Post by Hans » Sunday 30 March 2008, 19:48

is already mainstream. HD-DVD is out. Many people with a flatscreen will have a blue ray player within 6 months time. Especially with the European Football championship comming up this summer. Looking at a normal DVD is comparable with looking at a VHStape if you have a Full HD screen. Prices will drop quickly, now the big company's have decided to go for Blueray. You can't simply stop this evolution in media.

Just my 2 cents.

Well most newer DVD players with DivX support and HDMI can playback 1080P, so depending on compression the quality is the same (only problem is that only around 40min of film with light DivX or H264 (supported by some dvdplayers too) will fit a single layer DVD. Equal quality to Blu-Ray with about 30min on single layer DVD is achievable. Nearly any Blue-Ray Player should play back normal DVD with 1080P too I believe, so normal DVD with 1080P should be preferable as long as BD isn't mainstream.

As long as the cheapest Blu-Ray players are above 150€ few people will buy them according to analysis I have read. Once price for players drops to 100€ it will become mainstream. For 3.5'' internal drives the price of 100€ has been broken now, so at least on new computers and soon laptops Blu-Ray players (not writers) should become the norm soon.

I personally will wait till BD-Writers in 2.5'' are at around 100€ before upgrading, I use my laptop as Mediacenter anyhow.

@ Felix

If I may give you an advise for the next camera. Take the Scarlett. The little sister of the RED ONE. Will be announced next week at NAB.

Nils is right,

it went now very quick for NAB. It had to. That is good, because all is left to be done is music score and title design.

Unfortunately, this does not mean, it will be available for immediate free download, as soon as we are finished.

With 2k, Carved is ready for a theatre projection and I will certainly explore that possibility first. The DCI compliant packaging is set up, I need now to win the theaters for this project.

Later, we will explore the production of Bluray and DVD, if the demand is there. Some of you already expressed some interest.

And then, very late, an official download. By then, I think it will have leaked out from the discs anyway ... :-D.

So to answer your question, Franck, not within the next 10 months.
BUT! You will be able to see it on a big screen, when you will be willing to travel for that a bit.

10 month of :wall: :silly:   will be hard.
I dont know if I'm going to travel a lot to see an extremecarving film, even if I'm sure, it is the best it ever had on the planet. Geneva, Bern... Perhaps, but for me (my point of view), it's to expesive to go to Paris (example) for a movie.
If you produce a DVD, I will buy it right know ! But please, not in Bluray...

Dvd should only be for ... (previewing ?) ... well, not much in that case.
The interest of these images is their huge size.
Watching them on iPhone is pointless.

Just convince a digital equipped theatre in Geneva to project it, and you have it the soonest. :P

Jonas, good luck with the movie in Vegas... I am sure there will be a lot of us interested in buying the dvd both in regular or blue ray format..but do not expect many of us travelling to see the movie, as money is probably better spent on the slopes or on equipment. Thus, please do not irate the community letting us wait too much time so that you can hope to get some theatre contracts..

Until now the spirit of the extreme carving has been defined by sport+nature+friends+spiritofimprovement+globalsharingofcommonpassion, and not personal gain (although I personally believe that PJ&N and good filmmakers should be fairly rewarded for their efforts..).

You just took this spirit to make a movie. Hopefully a great movie, full of our passion. :clap2:

So, thanks a lot again for doing this, and I will personally hope to shake your hand, however, if by any chance you are just exploiting our passion for your own pockets and glory, that would not be appreciated by a lot of us. :naughty:

Sincerely
Francesco (aka Silber)

We want to be rich :) and famous

the idea with the commercial aspect of the movie ( selling it) is to refund the cost, and at some point pay the team that made it....not to buy us a audi TT...
As Jonas stated, the movie will still be freely available online after a few...so it will still be sharable by everyone!
