Which paint to paint a snowboard?

Post by domsch » Tuesday 12 December 2006, 21:42

I got a "new" Board and I would like to repaint the topsheet. Which kind of colour should I take so that it will be ok? and which kind of vanish?
Are there any special ones or just use normal one?

what do you use for your boards to make the topsheet? Paper? Plastic?

Painting the topsheet depends of its chemical composition. Different materials are possible : ABS, polyamides, polyurethanes, PBT.
A polyurethane (PUR) based paint should adhere on these materials. PUR paint give also good scratch durability, and weather resistance. But as Nils said, the problem is the flexibility of the painting layer. To avoid cracks, especially at cold temperature, a very soft grade is required. This kind of paint exist but is quiet difficult to buy for common people.

I asked a color shop in germany.
They said that I need to add elastifier to the colour, that the colour will be liquid enough. And then it's wouldn't be any problem.
For ABS you can use most colour. Look at colours for cars, they should be ok. But I would ask a pro.

Thanks domsch!

I understand there is no problem (such as crackling) with painting directly on the ABS

ok I finished my work (or almost, except the Decals).
until now it looks fine. I mixed the undercoat and the vanish with about 20% of elastifier. No cracks until now when I push in the middle of the board, but it need a practical test.
The vanish could be better... but anyway the ski people will damage the vanish quite soon with their sticks.... so I may have try at the end of this season. :)

Here the pics, as I said the decals are not final...
