narrow stance needed for me!

Post by pete » Monday 27 January 2003, 19:15

Hi,
My last carving session last year was with a skwal... this year, when i took again a skwal, the stance width was a regular one... i felt really uncomfortable... the second riding day, i set the bindings with a much narrower stance. I knew that could affect my stablity, but i tried! The carving was much better and much more comfy! I don't think i go fast enough to feel the difference of stability or maybe i'm weird! I also think these setting allowed the board tho have a better flex during the carve.
I'll try, during th season to set back a wider stance, little by little, so i can get used to.

What do you think?

Thanks for advices!

PS i don't know how to measure the stance width, tell me and i'll tell you how narrow it is!

Narrow stance

Post by fivat » Monday 27 January 2003, 22:41

I think it's worth noting the following fact.

With a narrow stance, the pressure of the rider acts more on the center of the board (or the skawl) than with a wide stance. So the board bends a bit more easily...
This can help you on hard boards and make you feel more comfortable. And anyway the stability is a bit better on a hard board.

But in EC, remember that the board should not be too hard. Indeed, with the proper technique the body is laid on the snow very early in the turn, while the pressure on the board is still weak. At this precise moment, how a too hard board could bend in the same curve as the turn ?

Everyone has to find his own compromise. That's why we make 3 flexes for each of our SWOARD sizes :D

I understand what you say... I dont think my board is really stiff (burton alp156) so i just think i'll find the good position during the season...
As i said, on the skwal, we ride with a really narrow stance: we have to bind the back foot before the front foot!
Btw, could you tell me how to measure my stance width? Is it from the center of the bindings?

Pete
Do you have any experience to ride skwal like board with wider stance, what are benefits of short stance there or is it just cause you dont have any other stance options. My Bastard (171/14) feels much stable with wider stance, currently riding it flat with stance 48cm

in skwal, with a wider stance, you'll need a HUGE canting to be close to be comfortable... try to stand ud, in the skwal position (so between 82 and 90 angles), with a wide stance... you'll see how it is! :)

My angles are somwhere 80-85 degrees and i dont have any canting (which i was refering as flat :D ).
You can see picture of my board and bindings in our group photo, you can quess which one in pic is mee of board.
Picture you can find at www.pokkis.tk then select Trench digging days, and then select Sappee 18-19 Tammi. Group photo is first one. One of guys in back row has Skwal 173 and he said that my board is much stiffer than skwal. He will test my board later and i will let you know how he felt it different to drive compared to real skwal

I bet you'll find it much easier to ride, more natural, and just really different.

I started first with more narrower stance but felt uncomfy, and have now widthened it step by step. I felt that balance was much poorer with narrower stance, but i propably should give new try in some phase

well... this is just just how i feel it... but i'e never heard about anyone riding skwal with a big stance. Oh, i did, but it was cuz he didn't know that you've to put ur back foot first, then the front one, so he had to ride a wider stance!
