Trip to Europe - where?

Post by nznigel » Thursday 15 September 2005, 22:46

I posted this on the Bomber forum and Nils suggested I post here - Going to Europe in Jan for a few weeks to visit family - I thought I would get in a week of snowboarding as well. So where is a good place to go. I don't want to spend all my time travelling so I need somewhere close to a major airport and I would prefer ski in/out accommodation. Any recomendations ? - My family is in Poland and England. My thoughts at the moment centre around either France or Austria, but I am here to be guided. I have a carving board and my wife has a carving board plus skis. I would describe our skiing/riding as intermediate and as we are from NZ we are good off trail in crap conditions but a bit "powder challenged". I guess I am after what we can't get in NZ - dry cold conditions, long slopes and good carving, steep enough to challenge me if I want it. I am keen for suggestions.

Nigel,
According to France/Sitzerland it seems quite easy to fly from England to Geneva or Nice via EasyJet (by the way, it should be cheap!)

* For Nice, it takes 1h30 to reach ski resorts (Auron, Isola).

* For Geneva, it can take less than 1h and the choice is bigger ... Avoriaz is a huge and beautiful ski resort. La Clusaz is also great.

Coming from Poland, Austria could be a good choice. Our German / East Europa team should be able to help you.

If you're looking for nice uncrowded slopes, with cold snow, have also a look to Italian resort in Aosta Valley (Breuil Cervinia, Courmayeur, La Thuile). Close from Torino airport. Possibility of heliski

Hi

Poles usually go to Austria, especially to Hintertux and Kaprun. There might be a problem with flight - I don't know if there are any flights from Poland to Austrian's resorts or cities that are close to mountains. I would suggest to fly to Geneva and then you have bunch of ski resorts around you.

Cheers
Mariusz
