Swallowtail boardbag

Post by Kirk » Wednesday 29 June 2005, 0:38

For the other swallowtail riders, and others with big boards over 185 cm what board bag are you using? I have not been able to find anyone who makes a bag over 185 cm or one that fits a swallowtail properly.

I have not been worried about it so far since I have not done any flying with my swallowtail but I want to bring it back to Europe with me next time I go home to Canada. I miss it so :( One thing I have learned is never leave home without your toys!

I have been thinking of getting a custom bag done or just having one of my current bags extended. Just wondering how others are dealing with transporting their big boards around.

Cheers

Dakine has some nice bags which are heavy but long enough, even my Tanker fits there nicely. I'm using also some Skibags with extended insulation when i need to travel more lightly, yes they are ugly but they are quite cheap. If i recall right mine is red Salomon double skibag

I travel mine around in a cheap "snowboard sock". I have to close it with a trousers belt because the normal system would make it too short for the board to fit in.

It's alright for me that way. But i wouldn't travel by plane with it, because it wouldn't be protected enough for very rough transportation (that's the way luggages are treated in the airports).

In short: i don't have any idea, but aim for maximum protection.

Swellpanik boardbag

Post by nils » Thursday 30 June 2005, 17:40

Swellpanik makes a 205cm board bag especially for its ST boards. Its just an everyday bag, not really a travel bag but: I'm basically using it on everyday use for 2-4 boards. I went to the ECS 04 with that bag despite the fact that is has no foam protection: It is wide enough to put strong cardboard inside that i wrapped around the edges in a U shape. I leave the cardboard inside all the time so it protects the edges from shocks.

You can order the bag from www.krakatoa.fr snowshop I think.

If you're in North America I think Forum had a bag last year that just fit a 185 board. A shop owner was telling me he used a Forum bag to fit his winterstick and nitro swallowtails in, but the problem was he had to remove the bindings. Good luck

DaKine Dually Bag might be just what you're looking for.

Haven't tried it myself, but I am planning on getting one for this season.

good ideas

Post by Kirk » Saturday 22 October 2005, 22:23

Thanks for the good tips! The Dakine bag looks really nice, I like that it can handle a board up to 205cm and has wheels.

I ended up managing to stuff my board into an old burton board case. I was suprized I got it into the bag since I thought the case was around 165 cm. The tips and tails were stretching the fabric a lot but there was a little bit of paddling to protect them and I just prayed that no damage would happen. I then stuffed in another board, my approach ski's, helmet, boots and other misc gear and food. Oh ya and a couple of six packs of really good beer from back home. It ended up weighing 85 kilos!!!! I figured the airlines would be nailing me big time but that was the only bag I checked in. It may have also helped that there are new security procedures coming from Canada. You have to take any oversized luggage yourself to a special security screening area so the check in personel never have to lift your bag and they never asked me to put it on the weight scale :) With the bag being so heavy I dont think they could throw the bag around and everything, including the beer and popadoms, were in perfect condition when I got back to Finland. But my god it was not fun getting that bag to the train station since there are no wheels on it, got some nice bruises on the shoulders. Just have to figure out how to get some wheels onto the sucker!

And now it is snowing!

Cheers :D
