Homemade PU-Dampening!!!!!

Post by e-mammut » Wednesday 20 November 2013, 20:05

Good Evening Europe,
I'd like to put a bit of dampening to my board.
For Protection of the Board itsself.
For a comfortable ride.

My idea was to cut out elements from
a mat of PU.

My question to everybody:
What thickness of the mat would you suggest? 2mm 3mm..?
What softness of the elastomer should be used? On manufacturers sites, they measure it in "shore" (shore 65 means soft??).
Have you tried something like that on yourselfes?

Thank you for links, hints and
own experiences..

I'd like to use a homemade-dampening-solution on these bindings:
Phiokka Macho
Burton Race-Plate
F2 Titanium Race

I am riding since 1986 and I have destroyed a wholelotta boards
especially because of the Burton-Race-Plates

Ho ho ho,
Nobody serious about self-made-dampening?

Cheers,
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Please take a look here: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=shore+sc ... =156&ty=44

Scale A is most commonly known for the rollerblade and skateboard wheels. 88A means those hard white small wheels when 78A means casual recreational rollerblade wheels. Which scale is your material measured with?

You write about PU mat, which IMO is not best for this. It's better to buy a piece of silicone rubber in one of the glass suppliers shops, and use this instead.

I use 1mm rubber from Castorama, which is common black rubber. 1mm is enough, however I've never destroyed anything under my feet, despite the fact that I am using very stiff Proflex TitanAl bindings.

If you think that PU mat is durable enough and is not going to be cut by a side of your bindings, please give it a try and report us back :-) It's very interesting.

I'm also looking forward to see the pictures...

Hi e-mammut

What is your intention ? do you want to put an elastomeric sheet on the whole board or just a disk below the bindings ?

Hi Arnaud,
My idea was to cut out a piece for the center of the Binding
for the virus-type plate binding.
For Burton and F2 bindings i want to cover the whole outline plus 3mm hangover.

I found the material, that is used in bomberonline's trenchdigger, the yellow disc
between board and binding quite good. My main goal is to transfer the bomber's
solution to any platebinding, i am using.

And i also considered to buy the catekplate; but it's made of polycarbonate..
maybe a safety-plus for the board, but maybe changing the stiffness/flex?

It is possible to buy 1000x2000x2mm of PU..
but it's 145€. The only thing, manufacturers mention is the behaviour of the material
measured in a scale called "shore".

I think, it is not a bad idea and I was wondering if
anybody has tried this before.

Daniel

Hi Abrax,
Thanks for your help.
I will follow my idea this winter.
Next winter I might be too old.

I'll let you know about what i'll find out!

Cheers,
Daniel

hi e-mammut

I tried some years ago to add a rubber disk below F2 bindings (diameter 125 mm). I used a soft rubber plate (about 55-60 Shore A)
I didn't like the feeling. The base of the F2 bindings isn't very stiff an with the additional softness given by the rubber plate, the board was oscillating below the feets, and the transmission of the force to the edge wasn't good. Because of this poor force transmission the edge grip wasn't very precise.
I tried also an aluminium disk and the results were more or less the same.

with the Phiokka PH1 bindings, the rubber disk was better but I didn't really feel a better dampening (PH1 still have a PVC disk much harder than the rubber disk)

If you want to try the disks (rubber and alu) they're available for free.

Hi e-mmaut, did you ever look at Bomber bindings? The TD3 have a huge elastomer for dampening, and the TD3 Sidewinders are specifically built for dampening and providing lateral flex -> http://www.bomberonline.com/

The main problem is that if you will use just rubber, you would put a lot of transversal force on the inserts.
For adding more leverage and a little damping you could make a central disk in hard plastic like Derlin and the rest in rubber.
As Arnaud wrote 50 shore will be right, F2 S-Flex and Goltes dampers are made in rubber of that hardness.

SFlex is not even close to 50, it is much harder and working space is very limited :naughty:
But you are right with possible additional load to inserts :bravo:
