Hot Blast GS 167 ??

Post by joe » Sunday 10 November 2002, 19:19

Hello,

first i want to thank you for this site, the movies are incredible!!!
THIS IS THE SITE ALL THE ALPINE BOARDERS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!

My actual snowboard is a factory prime 7.3 with a Raichle Carbon X-Bone Step in. It´s very hard to EC because of my used binding settings (next time i´ll try without canting and heel-lift at the back) and its waist width of only 180 mm , so angles not below 73°/63°.
The frontside turn seems to be OK, but no way at the backside.
Now i have to buy a new board for this season because the edge is broken.

On November 1st (before i did find your HP) i tested an Virus Tantalus (175 cm, waist app. 17 cm, elliptical shape) in Sölden but after i´ve read this, i think it´s too small although it´s a lot of fun to ride this board.

So, now i´m looking for broad GS board where i can do EC and "normal, GS-like" high speed carving.

Has anyone experience with a Hot Blast GS or a Factory Prime 7.8(200 mm waist width)???

Plss help me, because it´s not a long time to go before my favourite resort will open.

Joe

well it seems you have huge feet since you are using 73° on the front...
The new blast is indeed wider, as well as the FP. 2O cm is still narrow: you will be able to do front turns, but the problem will occur backside, because there are good chances that the back of the boot will stick out, or touch the snow when putting the board vertically on the snow..
I rented a blast that was around 19 cm last year, and i had to have big angles in order not to touch snow backside, and still felt uncomfortable... I could do the front turn with ease, but the back saw me fell almost everytime i tried it really EC style.. ( i have mondo 28.5 size / 44.5 feet)

The wider the board you can find in the race models, the happier you will be. :)

Hi nils,

thanks for your reply.

the high angles in my setting result not from my boots (UPS MachII, Mondo 280).
Due to the fact, that the X-Bone-bindings are very broad at the heelside, i cannot choose flater angles without getting my binding stick out of the board.
Well, the broadest board i tested was a burton speed 168 W (waist app. 225 mm) last time in sölden. I´ll go there once again to try all the things i´ve seen and read on this site. It looks so easy, but it always looks so easy when you are a master in it!!

nahh its not easy when you master it, its all about making it look easy that is hard.. Like in all arts, simple is harder to achieve than complicated...

hey! don't think too much about the waist! the tantalus is a extraordinary good board. and you can do ec's as well as any other carves you like with this board. if you got the tech, it is really no problem, equal to what board you carve when it's a good one! and finally the virus is one  if you like wider boards, try a virus dragster.

so long,

Hi Roman,

let me take the defence of J&P board recommendations :D . It has been explained by length by J&P on this page why they think that doing laid turns with a narrow board is more difficult than with a wide board. They did not say it is impossible. But the reasons given to ride a qider board are quite compelling in my opinion.
And please do not misunderstand my frankness (das ist wirklich nicht böse gemeint...): I would like to believe that it is no problem doing laid turns with such a narrow board. I am riding a lot in Austria (Soelden etc.), where there are a lot of serious carvers, but I have never seen similar carves as we can see them in the movies and pictures of this page, be it Virus riders or F2 riders or what you have. So I would be really eager to see a movie or picture of people with such narrow boards doing the same turns. Most people whom I see carving have a strong angle in their hip and reach out with their hands to the snow, but one cannot compare it to J&P style. The whole body has to be laid flat out on the piste, and you have to get up at the end of the turn. That is quite different from I have seen until now.
(Or just give me a call if you want to go riding this week-end, I am living in Munich! Then we could do some pre-christmas-carves 8) ).

I am riding the Virus Dragster, it is an excellent board, but not ideal for extremecarving as 1. the effective edge length is a little bit short and 2. the radius is way too short and each time I increase "edge angle" I usually do a quite painful nose dive. This of course is not a Virus problem but just a board problem.

Blue skies,

Eduard.

hey ed,
no problem! i would never become angry, while talking about snowboarding... i totally see, what you mean. also, what you see in towns like sölden. i am shure, we will meet sometime an do some 'really' carves. now that winter has coming to switzerland, we will mostly be riding here at home. maybe you will join us here or maybe we'll meet at the end of the season in sölden.
carve on,

Sounds good, I will be in Zermatt from Dec28th until Jan4th, are you by coincidence also there? Let me know!
What I said also applies to me. Before coming up on these pages I thought "well, you are not an extreme carver but your technique and style is ok". I changed my mind when I watched the videos here...

Greets, Eduard.
