Have you experienced an avalanche?

Post by fivat » Thursday 22 May 2003, 19:47

This winter 3 skiers died off-piste in 3 different avalanches in my favourite (secret :-)) spot! Nobody had died in this small resort for 18 years...

The statisitcs tell us how many people have been rescued (or found dead) after accidents in avalanches. But they don't take into account the number of riders who have caused avalanches or have rescued themselves (or their friends), without informing the authorities...

So I'm curious to know how many of you have experienced an avalanche (with or without rescue). You can vote here, thank you! (you must be a registered user and you can vote only once).

i initiatett 2 small avalanches last winter when i made a stop turn at the beginning of a small snowfield, but noone was harmed. we had 20 cm of fresh powder after a sunny week. the avalanches stopped after 30 and 80m in the flat, the snow was 0.5 to 1.5m high in the :?: impact zone, and burried a forrestway :?: . i wouldnt ride those hills if the snowfields were
bigger and more exposed, because unfortunately i dont know much about snowconditions etc. . i felt save because we were above the slipping snow and it startet really small, but it gets so fast and wide in a moment
i hate avalanches! but as my powderlove is a fast growing plant i definately need more alpine knowledge as my next destinations will be in higher( above treeline) resorts.
i didnt know i had to informe somebody, as noone was harmed, i d be afraid to lose my liftpass as it might not be allowed to ride offslope?
anyway i am more careful now but more addicted too. the white powder is a dangerous drug 8O . ride save 8)

hi,
2 or 3 years ago i was in an avalanche which was coused either by myself or a friend of mine we couldnt really get it out.....

it was quite strange i was wondering why i fall and then recognized that im sliding down the hill :) after some turnovers i managed to push my board into the snow and ride out..... and by the way he didnt even recognize the avalanche and was really surprised when i told him at the next position he waited for me. so not really that much with help from a friend if it would have been worse :)
