Freeride from Zinal to Grimentz

Post by Whitey » Thursday 11 January 2007, 12:53

Hey,

would it be possible to freeride from Zinal to Grimentz? By looking at the map, it seems to be possible to start somewhere from the Corne de Sorebois, and then maybe passing the Lac de Moiry, in order to reach the blue route heading down to Grimentz village. How that sounds?

Based on summer MTB experience - I'ld not pass ver the lac de moiry but go straight down. Going to la Barrage is not steep at all as I managed to ride down on a XC MTB (my DH aren't great). Beautiful Scenery

I think avalanche danger is moderate at those routes as it is only steep, not very steep.

Hey dudes, where is La Barrage on the map? Or is it just the big pass between Zinal and Grimetz, called as La Barrage?

Here is the map: http://www.zinal.net/pop/plan-pistes-zinal.pdf

Sorry, but what comes to finding out good freeride courses, I'm just remorseless bloodhound! If there is enough snow, I'll chase it down :lol2:

la Barrage , Oh I just ment the Lac de Moiry.

If you find swiss orthophotos you can figure out how to go from Zinal to Grimentz directly. Google Earth doesn't offer good enough resolution.
At my homemountains in Austria I find it amazing how many new runs me and my friends have found just using 1:1250 color aerial photos and a 1:25000 overlay for the height lines. (though most runs need some abseiling to get there).

Felix, you are right, Google Earth is not good enough for that purpose (eventhough is very nice to find locations). Anyhow, thanx for you info!

Sorry to hijack the thread but I was looking at the map posted a few posts back. Looks like a fun place to ride. I have a question though. In the States our treeline is about 3000-3400m. But I noticed on the map it was closer to 2200m. Is that due to the terrain, or the type of trees that grow there? It must be fun with all that open terrain.

Of course you can ride it backwards...if you're careful.

Treeline is in general in Europe from 1600m in the Eastern Alps to 2100/2200 at the Western Alps, actually few places if none in Europe have a higher treeline than the Vallais

Are those areas snow covered all year...like glaciers?

I just had a look to the swiss map "Arolla" & "Montana". The south and east part of "Arolla" is fully filled with white color (glaciers).

Would be a nice thing to go downhill to the lake of Moiry (only 500 m of downhill), but the next valley, west of it, seems mutch better! From 3250 m down to 1350 m (never ending 1900 meters of downhill) in treeless fields at 30 degree steepness in mean. I think there are no cabelcars for climb and You can enjoy there the well known killing avalanches of Evolène!
Gliding on Snowboards,
like Pogo, Kessler, Virus, Hot, Nidecker and others,
from 151 up to 183 cm and 14 to 27.4 cm width,
covering any kind of shapes with
any kind of boots and bindings.

Its not really steep to freeride to Evolene. I went uphill on the Grand Raid Cristalp carrying my bike on my back. (while it was snowing in August - the most demanding MTB race I'ver ever tried - well I did not finish as the stopped the race due to bad conditions and injuries without sufficient rescue possibilities.).

If you stand your man there are very nice Chutes in the Grimentz area - take a 50m rope however as its damn steep and you don't wanna fall down.
