Proceedings of the Space Sciences and Technology Conference
From YOSHIMURA SHOICHI Japan
The material is Zylon, one of the poly-p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole(PBO) fibers. .....
..... The bleaking strength of 1343N is measured, but light resistance test has shown that the strength retentions are about 52% for 127 solar-days exposure and about 32% for 394 solar-days exposure, respectively.

Jamie Zeppetella's lawsuit also alleges that Toyobo conducted tests that showed Zylon retained only 35 percent of its strength when exposed to visible light for six months.

Additional data from Toyobo show that PBO fibers are also susceptible to
sunlight. Both AS and HM fibers loss more than their 50% strength
after only 3 months exposure at Ohtsu, Japan

Development of the ultra long duration balloon
... very long hold time system for use in NASA’s 100 Day Ultra Long Duration Balloon Project.
Early in the development process, it was learned that this material exhibited an unusual sensitivity to degradation by ambient light. This is in addition to the expected sensitivity to UV (Ultraviolet) radiation. The fiber manufacturer reported all of these properties in their literature. Due to the operating environment of the ULDB it is necessary to protect the tendons from both visible and UV radiation.

PBO has one disadvantage in that its strength is severely degraded by exposure to visible and UV radiation. Current ULDB platforms circumvent this characteristic by the use of pigmented polyethylene sleeves which shield the tendons from visible and UV radiation.
Ultimate Tensile Strength Results:
After 600 hours ( =25 days) exposure to UV light (340 nm UVA): 50.78%

STATE OF ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF LAW
ANDREA M. E SQUER 12 75 W. WASHINGTON STREET
The problems with Zylon® were made public after June 2003, when a Forest Hills, Pennsylvania police officer was seriously injured by a .40 caliber bullet that passed through his Second Chance Ultima® vest.
In January, the State charged Second Chance with violation of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act in connection with bulletproof vests manufactured with Zylon® fiber. The State alleged that based on scientific aging tests, Second Chance knew Zylon® degrades rapidly and permanently when exposed to such common conditions as high humidity and heat, fluorescent light and sunlight. The complaint further alleged the company failed to disclose this information or even warn its customers about these test results.

Well, perhaps brand-new Zylon-butter will help.
When Zylon-butter is not avaiable, just visit next sport- or shoe-store, ask for some samples of black shoe-cream!
