Edge Sharpening - Extremecarver and Dual

Post by tali » Friday 11 November 2011, 21:19

Hi all!
I have been reading the SWOARD Instruction Manual recently and found out something very interesting and new (for me) about edge sharpening:
Our boards have been designed to provide a progressive edge hold along the entire running length. In addition, the nose guides the board accurately through a carve.
For these reasons the edges must be shapened from tip to tail, for the entire edge length, including the entire nose.
De-tuning (unsharpening) the ends of the nose and tail, a very common practice with many snowboarders and skiers, will decrease the overall performance of our boards. This is especially true in icy conditions. De-tuned edges will result in less edge hold and a ride that is less accurate.
It seems that my poor Swoard was "de-tuned" for two seasons!
Do you sharpen the entire edge length on SWOARD Extremecarver? And what about SWOARD Dual?

I do sharpen from top to bottom for the full edge length with the technique as explained by the tooltonic gentlemen

What angles are used / recommended for the edges anyway?

I use 0, but as far as I know between 0 and 1 is recommended

After several discussion, it's seems my easier solution is to do do 1° on base, and 89° on the edge (in result classic 90°)

1/89 seems more easy to achieve, otherwise the underside would be very difficult to sharpen. I think I'll stick with that.

Is there any way to find out what the current or factory angles are on a board? Or just guess?

The Swoard instruction manual here recommends:
In order to maximize the lifespan of the edges, we recommend sharpening your edges to 90 degrees. If you wish to increase the stability of the board when it is riding flat on the base, a negative one (-1) degree can be applied to the base edge and 89 ° to the side edge. We do not recommend sharpening your edges to less than 88 degrees (on the side edge), as this reduces the edges' lifespan.
My question is: are these recommendations the same for the Swoard Dual model and is it better to sharpen the whole length of the edge for Dual, too?

I use 88 (lateral) and -1 (base) on the Extremecarver, but 90 / -1 on the Dual board, because being for off piste and soft snow, a sharp edge is not necessary. In addition in case you touch a stone off piste, 90° is more resistant than 88°

Not sure for the demo board. Maybe 88 or 89° I think.

i'm sure i asked Patrice about it, but i'm not sure about his answer. i rememer something like " you can go down with the edge if you want" so i think it was 89+1.

yes, strange :)
about 0.5° / 1° come from the factory (sanding on a rubber cylinder), and 90° side angle because it avoid tool setting :) But works perfectly in powder ;)

You can easily find out.
Mark a piece of the edge with a textmarker.
Then use the file. If it takes away the whole color with one sharpening,
you will have the angle, that was used for the edge.
