Damaged inserts

Post by negedeng » Wednesday 18 January 2006, 15:38

Hello everyone,

two of the inserts of my Swoard are damaged.

Is there any way to fix that and put two new inserts in?

damaged inserts...

Please show pics and explain how it happened.
It is not possible to replace inserts, but maybe you can rethread the screw threads so they work again..

Pictures shall explain more than words... Strange that they can be damaged, the inserts used by Virus are among the thickest, strongest on the market.

thnx ;) of course u can always drill from bottom and change the insert.. but i'm not sure Frank will warranty the board anymore after you drill the base...
I guess if its needed it can be the only solution....
locating the insert is easy> put board outside ( cold) then wax the base ( hot) there should be a shadow of the cold inserts on the base helping you locate them.

I don´t know what it is caled in english. In Germany we say an never ending thread (ein unendliches Gewinde). It hapens if you tighten a screw to hard. You wouldn`t see anything on a picture.

So there is no material left to rethread.

It is a Sword of the first generation. I think there is no Virus stuff built in.

I will ask local dealers if they can change the inserts.

the first generation inserts had no bottom. You can eventually drill all the way through it so you know exactly where the insert is. Then from the bottom, you can replace the insert through the base, rubber sheet, and fiberglass ( inserts are "inserted " from the bottom side). It is advisable to reinsert new insert with fiberglass woven around it, and eventually 3M epoxy microspheres that will help the resin to stick to the core and be stronger. Then finally patch the base for clean look. Some shops are good and you can barely see the event after it is repaired.

You could also do the repair by yourself if you can get a hold on some inserts

Don't forget to protect the insert from filling with resin! Happened to me on a windsurf board and i had to remove it eventually !!!
good Luck!

Hi - I have never tried these, but for what it's worth:

1) Some people use a tap and cut new threads of greater diamater in the existing insert, and then use a larger screw for that one particular insert. May be difficult to find a screw of the correct size if the screw head for your particular binding has a custom shape.

2) Use a tap and cut new threads of greater diamater in the existing insert, then apply a helicoil insert to revert it to the original thread size.
