Which areas are the best in Val d'annivers for carving?

Post by domsch » Saturday 6 February 2010, 11:39

I will go tthe Val d'annivers for 2 days however I am not sure yet which areas I should go.

Which is your recommondation? There are the following:
- Zinal
- Grimentz
- St. Luc

which I would like to try.. but only 2 days and 3 areas so one have to wait..

I like carving (normal mostly not to much extremecarving) and my father is on skis.

thanks for your help.

Zinal is THE carving mecca. Two highend-extremecarving-slopes, several other different slopes, mostly empty. Grimentz shouldn't be too bad too. No idea about St. Luc.

To be honest: if you are not carving the black slopes, I wouldn´t go to Zinal.
The other resorts should have better options in red slopes.

Hi,

Zinal has the steepest slopes, 2 great black ones - Barthelemy and Le Col. They are pretty steep so you need to like carving on steep slopes.

Grimentz is bigger and has more red and blue ones which are great for normal carving but too flat for extremecarving.

St Luc & Chandolin has mostly flat slopes, blue and light red. The Illhorn area is quite nice for normal carving and not too steep.
St Luc is quite nice for freeriding as well.

If you like a bit bigger resort which more pistes and not too steep i recommend Grimentz and St. Luc & Chandlon, Zinal is best for steep slopes.

Hope this helps.

Mostly I agree with Tomasso2k and the others. However, I would mention that Grimentz has a really steep slope down to the bottom station. When the ECS had to be in Grimentz 2006 due to bads snow conditions in Zinal some of mine friends named this slope "die Angsthang". Try it and enjoy the rush.

@Harald: Angsthang sounds pretty steep. So maybe I have to try it next time when I'm in Val d'Anniviers.

Hi,
"Angsthang" is not steeper than Le Col in Zinal and much shorter so not really worth just to go there to try it.

yes its a bit steeper: It is in the opening sequence of the first opus ( extremecarving) you see this slope: frankly at the 2006 ECS it was scary ( very icy).

Run under cabin was not icy 2006 sesssion at all, it was just hardish.
On that upper short run which we run mainly then, there were few icy spots.

Looks like great fun on opus 1. I think I'll go there next time when I'm in Val d'Anniviers. I think it's possible to switch area during the day and also the snow 'n rail (sbb.ch) lift ticket should be valid for both areas (Zinal and Grimentz) but I'm not shure about that.

@pokkis: Nice to see you here again. I hope you had a good return :)

Yesterday morning, we rode in Grimentz. The "angsthang" was big fun for the first runs. But I don't think that it's steeper than Le Col. Maybe it's a bit more impressive because it's between trees, but if the conditions are like yesterday, no problem to carve.

The rest of Grimentz was a disappointment. Very flat with one short exception: Les crêtes black. Maybe good for those which are not doing EC.

BTW: snow 'n rail ticket is valid for whole Val 'd Anniviers. Maybe an option for those which are coming to the ECS by train. It's a Combi-Ticket for train and lifts. So it's maybe cheaper to buy this one with the yellow ECS strap.
