Snow: best season start for 10 years

Post by fivat » Thursday 15 November 2007, 22:15

In the Alps, this is the best season start for 10 years at least :!:
In some areas in Austria they had not seen so much snow on November for 30 years. 8O

Except the biggest resorts, most resorts are still closed. However some of them (like Zinal) will open this week-end because of the good conditions. :D

Here is a map showing the situation in Switzerland: it compares the snow heights at 2000m to the average values for the last 10 years.

The first Swoards of generation 3 have been sent today and some lucky persons will get them tomorrow, right in time for this early start! :D 8)

Our local slopes in Oslo is opening at Saturday, the next earliest start in its history, although man made snow. Also many mountain resorts have opened. In Oppdal for example, where Pokkis's camp take place the week after Zinal, there is also lots of natural snow, making off-piste possible. The early start must have something to do with the global heating problem? Or maybe the heat has been turned off for this season?

Zinal mid-November

Post by fivat » Friday 16 November 2007, 13:10

It's hard for all of us who are still at office these days...

I just got a MMS from a friend in Verbier: he is riding fresh powder knee deep! 8O
He has filmed the scene, argh! Moreover it's very sunny.

The picture below shows Zinal today! Local teams are already training on "private" slopes.

The same situation is in Poland. Lots of resorts in mountains starts at this weekend. In Slovakia too.
I hope to catch some turns at Sunday :)

cheers

Apparently in Czech Republic too... but they start to open even local slopes here in Swiss Jura! And some of them are with night skiing and just 15 minutes drive away!
Board? Just a Choc, 180...

My last run today, just one hour ago, after 3½ days of pure powder-snowboarding.
650 meter of high, but I had to cross at least about 10 tracks from others on this last run!

:bravo: 8)

Have you hit some stones or not? It's deep, but there is no packed snow below?

Of course I know! Look at right side of the picture above! Track continuation starts with a V, bottom to the right side. This can be only achieved by a swallow-tail!

Snow below was compressed by it self (cumulative snowfall was about 2.5-3 m @ 1600 m), equalized by wind and coverd by additional 40-50 cm
It was at 1200 over see level. 120 cm of snow. Not any stone all 3½ days. Only two graze on my face from some contact with branches from high trees, nothing else (You know, disadvantage at to much snow is, that branches in forest are very much closer to the rider, as usually). Snow-high 120 cm was mesured at a full-depth wet snowslides down to the grass, at upper and lower edge.

Well, at Friday, in an other resort I was sinking in snow a view time down to my shoulders, with no more resistance under my feet, when I was hicking up some meters for best run (@ 2000 meter over seelevel). That wasn't so funny, and I had need my swallow as anchor to help myself!
