anti-theft protection - board locks etc.

Post by Böany » Thursday 18 October 2007, 20:25

Hey guys!

Got a quite expensive board last season and I'm wondering what you're doing to protect your boards from being stolen , for example when having a drink (or 2, maybe 3 - 4 drinks, anyway...) in a glacier-restaurant!? With my old 80€-ebay-board that wasn't quite a problem, but now I'm a little worried, though...

What do you think about board-locks like the one from Icetools etc.?

Any lock is better than no lock, and any lock can not stop thief taking your board if he really wants it.
Lock and visibility to board is best protection.
But please dont take your board to restaurants like some idiots do 8O

Maybe I am a patological optimist, but most of the people do not know and/or understand the value of quality carving equipment, not to mention that the remarketibility of such equipment is quite limited compared to ski equipment.

So the potential theft for our equipment should be an advanced carver. And he should also be similar size and weight, so that he steels a board that he/she can really use.

So what are the chances of having an other advanced carver with guilty intention with the same size and weight like you near to your equipment exatly at the time when you have your beer?? I would say very low...

I think for the above reasons we are much less endangered than skiers with new and fancy equipment.

Or maybe I'm wrong and one would just steel it for the bling-bling (you know, titanal, zylon, whatever....)

Let's be more scientific: whose board was stolen in the past?

Cheers

Well never got one stolen (I use a lock)
But once in Italy at a apres ski bar my board was locked next to the entrance, and I went out for "fresh air" and I heard two persons talking to each other: "If you wanna steal a board, then take the Virus there, its worth...!"
Well after I told them, that this is mine, and the Giants next to me were my friends they were convinced, that it is not the best board to steal

Carving equipment theft is not unheard, in bomberonline someone complained ca. month ago about it and in french forum Syldavid wrote, that his Swoard was stolen from the garage. Of course, in these cases it was not theft from ski-rack, but still...
I personally use bakoda lock and leash:
http://www.tactics.com/bakoda/strapless-lock-leash
It's quite comfortable, as leash is quite long and allows carry board easily while attached to the foot and lock is quite small and pocketable. Of course, if someone is determined to take board, then it does not stop him, but for "sunday-evening thieves" is should do the trick.
If you take it into use, then take care during locking to prevent theft by just cutting rope part of it. I usually put this cable through binding bail and rack and attach lock to both ends of cable, so one has either to cut cable or unmount binding (or guess code) in order to take board along.

Crime organisations are also on work!

In 2006, at the smal area of the Austrian Vorarlberg (about 49 x 53 km) there where 5700 pair of stolen Skis and 800 of stolen Snowboards.

A lot of them you will refind at the Czech Republic, Slovakia or in some countrys of old Yugoslavia.

If You like to do this:
"If you wanna steal a board, then take the Virus there, its worth...!"
maybe one well recommend ski-area in Vorarlberg would be the best choice! 8O

I think Istavn have a point. A tief must be well informed to steel an advanced alpine board. Otherwise he will be more interested in soft boards because he will sell it way easier than a alpine board. And the chances to be in the same place at the same time with a tief carver are extremly small.
Even some friends of mine with Volkl P60 and RaceTiger doesn't lock their equpment.

Well, Istvan, you ARE a patological optimist, I think  Guess most boards or ski are not stolen for being used by the thiefs themselves but for being sold.

Well, maybe I use some plastic-bag for hiding the Virus-logo, a 20.000 Volt-electrified board-lock and a .44 Magnum...
