EC Settings

Post by lobella » Monday 27 January 2003, 0:57

Hi...!
I'm coming from some days spent on the snow....! :-)
I've tried the EC settings, the first turns were terribles but now I really like the new settings: there's only one thing....the stance. :-|
After a lot of settings variations I ride with these settings on a 168cm board with Raichle AF700TS ( with the modification suggested in the forum ) and Snowpro Step-in bindings

bindings: flat
front feet: 55°
rear feet: 50°
position: in the middle of the contact lenght
stance: 45 cm

the problem is the stance....wider stance cause a lot of pain in my rear foot without canting pads.
After having tried a lot of settings I feel these settings very comfortables....now I make my backside a lot better ( with flat settings you really can feel the turn ) and I've made my first EC frontside turns.
What do you think about the stance...it's too narrow ? I feel myself stable anyway.... ( I can take my arms along my body whitout gesticulating in the turns ).

bye

Hi Liobella,

It seems the AF700 are a bit too hard. In that case you could try to replace the rear spring with a softer one. Or reduce the stance a little bit. In fact, the stance is in direct relationship with the stiffness of the boots: softer boots = higher stance, harder boots = narrower stance.
Just be carefull to feel balanced enough.

Standard stances

Jacques:

I've been very curious about stance settings as well, but I rarely have several days of riding to try different stances for a long enough period to really feel the differences. Can you suggest some stances that people can try for riding EC style? For example, for a Rider (me) who is 188 cm tall, and riding a 168cm board, the EC stance width might range from 52cm to 58 cm wide - adjusted for stiffness of the boot. I realize that this is highly individualistic, however, it seems that there can be some generalizations made that would help.

A simple matrix might be helpful in those of us experimenting with this issue with little time to end up riding "bad positions" for too long. Also, a list of the factors that can change the range of the stances. For example, would a longer board indicate that I should choose a wider stance?

Thanks. Hope all is going well with the production of the boards!

My Settings for EC

I rode my first ECarves earlier this season but after I had gone I noticed that my setup was not exactly like they say. I ride Burton Fire boots which are pretty darn stiff on a Burton Factory Prime 167. When I was trying to center my bindings, Bomber TD SI's (also stiff) I was given the choice of about 16.5" or 17.5" (stupid 3 hole patern). I chose the 16.5"since I was rinding ~18" with 6 degrees of cant and knew that it would be too tight. I was not near a computer so I just went off of my memory of how I remembered their stance picures and the images of the videos that are burned into my retnas. I was pretty close, I absolutely love this setup even though I am using too stiff of boots and too stiff of bindings and the 16.5" ~ 42 cm (center of mounting disk to center of mounting disk) was perfect for my legs. I had a little strain in my legs do to the stiffness of my boots at first so I put 1 notch of forward lean in my back boot and away I went. I think that Jacques and Patrice have a great stance but I also think that their equipment helps them out with some of this. AF700's are suppose to be really stiff unlike the northwaves that they wear. They can have a larger stance with there equipment because it is more forgiving laterally. Try some variations, keep a wrench in your pocket and change every 1 or 2 runs until you get it right. You wont regret it... I don't

There's many of us that get frustrated with settings. It can be relative to boot stiffness, certainly. However, if settings are wrong, stiffer boots talk shit to us much louder.

One of the keys is your height compared to the width of your stance. Our legs with feet apart form a triangle. There's no way to keep moving our feet farther apart without much more "cant angle" under each foot. Otherwise, our comfortable triange is distroyed by additional weird angles at the top of the boot....very painfull. Cants do not have to be equal under each foot. ie. if you want the front foot flat, back foot needs to be more excessive.

Most of us under estimate the value of the Cant.

I'd like to add some informations to stance question...
I've started with 45cm stance because is the setting that allowed to center
the stance in the midle of the board.... but thinking that with my Madd Alpine 168 with canting I've 52cm stance I've added 3cm and I'm started with these settings ( 48 cm. ).
After the first day the pain at my rear foot was too much....so I've changed my stance to 45 cm....and the first sensation was: wow....now it's good !
You' re right Dan, the stance settings is really a personal thing, now I think that I'll go with 45cm....thanks to all for your answers.

bye
