Zinal/Sierre in Summer

Post by Felix » Tuesday 14 June 2005, 19:55

Hi to all of you, especially the swiss. Anyone a local of the region?

Can you give me any info about the region of Sierre. I happen to work there for 2 month at the camping "Swiss Plage"

What sports equipment should I take with me? My MTB - my Rock Climbing equipment and my board? Is there a glacier? I have to work 6 days a week, so 1 day I can do sports all day, otherwise during breaks and in the evening.

Just noticed that my campsite is only 25 km from Zinal, So even if I have not yet managed to go there in Winter, at least I can enjoy it in summer.

Est-ce que la plupart des personnes parlent francais la bàs?

Have you checked this?

Yes, take your MTB and your board. The region of Valais is excellent for mountain biking because there are so many mountains :D

For snowboarding, you have two glaciers close to Sierre:
- Zermatt: 1h15 by car, but you have to take a train at the preceding village (because cars are forbidden)
- Saas Fee: 1h by car... the best place! Many teams come there to train. It will be open from 2nd July. You have to walk for 5 minutes from the parking to the lift (cars also forbidden, hehe!)

For trekking, you have so many places. But visit Zinal (34 minutes from Sierre by car or bus), and Grimentz (11 minutes form Zinal) whose village centre is very beautiful.

Cran Montana is the biggest and famous resort close to Sierre (18 minutes by car), with a golf, MTB ways, etc.

Enjoy your summer. If it rains, you can be sure to find some powder on the glaciers the following day! 8)

Hoi Patrice,

saw your answer - you say, that you go on the glacier in summer?? How is the snow then??
Was last year with the MTB on the glacier in Sölden - but it lookes realy bad and I wouldnt go with my board there. All over stones and sand on the glacier....

Zermat is quite higher.....so it´s better???

Have a nice time....

Swiss glaciers

It can be good! Look at our Web page:
https://www.extremecarving.com/photos/photosjuly02.html 8)

However it can be very bad, icy in the morning and wet in the afternoon... Don't go boarding when temperature is higher than 30°C in the towns. Sometimes in summer there are colder days. Watch the weather forecast: if it rains in the towns, and if temperature is 0°C at 3500m for example, it's snowing on the Swiss glaciers.

Slighty higher, but it's too flat and not interesting. Saas Fee is definitely the best. However I have never been in Corvatsch, close to Silvaplana (not so far from Austria)...

PS: The glacier of "Les Diablerets" in west Switzerland is closed: the company has gone bankrupt :-(
