Dramatic? For whom? It is just common sense, so we don't have too many casualties among the weak. I hope a vaccin will soon be found otherwise we will have the next wave of Corona in the autum :(

From today all ski resorts are closed in Switzerland.
They are still open in France. 8O

It's dramatic for all the passionate riders. And economically dramatic. :?

Yeah, it's a bit chaotic.
In the case of Gstaad it's a bit strange, because this resort is right nearby Les Diablerets, which is closed.

All "Valais" (= "Wallis" aud deutsch) is closed. In "Vaud" (="Waadt" auf deutsch), they were thinking to let open all the resorts wihout any gondolla (and the only one with a big gondola would have been limited to 50 persons). But they also closed.

Actually because of the MagicPass, many resorts don't care and prefer to close: the season is already paid. Moreover, usually in the low season of March-April they lose money what is compensated by Eastern, and globally this makes no difference.

Of course it is wise to close, so we preserve the old and weak people against the Coronavirus. But it's really depressing for most of us. I feel like "un lion en cage", which means in French "a caged lion". ;-)

It is OK, Patrice - you will survive. Figuratively and literally. :D

At least this is coming towards the end of (Swiss) ski season, and most of us have had some snow fun.

I personally think the governments have been very slow and prioritised profit over containment. If this strain becomes as common place as the common 'flu, then we are all going to await winters with trepidation (assuming it abates over summer, we don't even know that), and if you don't worry about yourself, you have to worry about elderly relatives.

So lets take the hit this winter and get rid of this thing if we can.

I suggest everyone in Europe wear a mask when you go outside (i.e. leave your home). This is a very common practice in Hong Kong due to the lesson of SARS virus in year 2003. :wall:

99% of people wear a mask since late January because Covid-19. If someone not wear a mask in the town, everyone will keep a distance from the person, because of being afraid of getting infected. As of now (14/3/2020), 99% of people are wearing a mask! Which means we have been already wearing mask for 1.5 months! :clap3:

unarguably, wearing mask is an effective way to prevent from being infected. We have 140 cases out of 7 million people. Nowadays, we have 3 or 4 new cases everyday and they are all travelling from overseas such as Eygpt, Europe, USA, China etc. We seldom has local cases for a few weeks.

I do not understand why Europe doctors, nurse and citizens not wearing a mask!? Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong. And I hope I am wrong.

In a place where wearing masks is uncommon, I think the mentality is, if you are wearing a mask, you must be sick, and therefore have Covid-19.

Maybe as wearing masks becomes common (Switzerland is quite badly hit with cases), this may change.

Other reasons are, we get conflicting advice about masks. And they are very hard to get these days.

Certainly, Doctors should wear them. But we are still at the "lets not shake hands" stage 8O

For the benefit of "Swoarders", I strongly suggest everyone to wear a mask when you go outside, especially for those living in the urban city. It might look weird in first sight. However there is no need to take care of other people's view as your and your family health is utmost important.

If you do not have a surgery mask, I guess a dry ski face mask will also do little help(unconfirmed).

I attach some photos showing the recent/current situation in Hong Kong, so as to change European mind. We still live like this everyday and we are healthy! :chinese:

Do not spend more time to think whether to buy mask. My best suggestion is BUY IT NOW as much as you can. If time let me go back to January, I will buy at least 1,000,000 masks, Seriously. :evil2:

@hknz: Yes! When will the European governments ask everyone to wear a mask in public? Well, there is already a penury and priority is given to the hospitals. But production must be pushed more.

@ Claire Faits d'Hiver:
Apparently, the few resorts which were still open on 14th March may have problems with the Swiss government, as this was illegal. The fines could be 5000 CHF (= about 5000 €). Read for example this article (in French).

During the weekend, all the ski resorts in France have closed too.

 From today all the ski resorts in the Alps are closed.

The situation has evolved very quickly and is worse than expected.
In consequence we see the start of an economic crisis. Let's hope that this won't have too bad consequences on the long term and won't affect too much the sport which we love.

Take care and follow the recommendations!

Canada has also closed the ski resorts, as well as the borders like many countries.
All the planet is affected.

In France people have to stay at home and can go out only for crucial things (work if homework is not possible, food, health). In Switzerland it's still possible to make sport outside, but not in groups.

@hknz: Regarding the masks, there is really a penury. And it seems that many masks were exported to China when the Coronavirus appeared! 8O

In about 10 days, we should know if the situation will improve in Europe.
But for sure the consequences will last for several months. :?

Yes, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, other travellers have bought many mask in early Jan & Feb. My advice is BUY as much as you can NOW.

Prepare for the coronavirus to last 6 to 9 months or even longer! Frankly, I am not confident that we can ski next season.

God knows what happen next.
