I had during the last 8 days 5 days riding at least 50cm of freshies fallen overnight.

My homebase got this morning an extreme weather warning in: 150-250cm of fresh snow expected from today afternoon (pretty accurate, it really started dumping) to Tuesday Morning, and snowfalls supposed to continue until Friday.

In the County of Scheibbs all schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to 150cm (in the valley) of snow during last 36hrs, and much more expected.

In the east it's the best season since 3 years - which it undoubtly can't top (6m snowbase at 1500m altitude by mid February - cattle was driven up the mountain no earlier than late July).

Tomorrow and Tuesday I'll be freeriding again - bloody lucky I still have holidays at Uni.

On the other hand in the Julian Alps 10m of base right now at 2000m altitude mean alltime record high. Sadly many lifts are still below the snow.

Leisure-time - powder-snowboarding.

Instead like many people drinking a bear or watching TV on sofa, I decided Yesterday night at 9 p.m. to walk up a hill to enjoy some powdersnow for a single downhill. That was over nearly the highness You can do on Soelden Glaciers (Schwarze Schneid I+II), but on fully darkness. Thats realy a nice idea to calm down, for to go to good night. Just closing the day with snowboarding on deep powder, not with pills of sleeping powder!

+ 50/60 cm !

I'm not sure if people knows it at all, but there is just a guarantee basic need of some authentic snowboarders, to pick up a swallow-tail snowboard (e.g. one from Pogo), just for going surfing on high speed on a deep new powdersnow at a bright blue sky.
In fact, these authentic snowboarders don't like verry much to cross some of their own tracks the whole day. Against this, many snowboarders like much more to cross others tracks all the day.

It's cool to make the first track at the lift! 8)

In the nineties I was used to make the first track at the lift of a black slope of Ovronnaz (small resort in the region of Valais). It was too steep for the ratrack and in deep fresh snow the skiers could not go uphill (the skis were not fat at that time). :D

Sommetimes it can be a good idea to take out his powdergun, after snowhigh increased up to 300 cm on same level over zero, like you can find it on Zinal village.

Todays Pic1: tracks from a skier - from a snowboarder - and from who?

Todays Pic2: Freestylers like to turn to well cunstructed funparks.
As an authentic snowboarder I like to turn construction areas to my personal funpark!

I call it just as a revelation!
Ready for fullspeed on wide areas, spread trees or tight and dark forest. (pics from last sunday)

@fivat About 30% of skilift (steeper parts) they prepare every day stepping down with ski's.

And some resort starts to close now, because people are in satiation of skiing. Many stores put a way since some vew weeks also any ski and snowboard gear, for placing springtime things like camping chairs and sunshades!

@Felix I looks You have now the right ground layer of snow. +100 cm of new snow is in general ok, every week +50 cm is fine. More then that can be bad, because of avalange danger. And I hope there would not be many more days of +100 cm. 10-20 % of avalange-blockers are now overfilled and some local automatic snowhigh measurement station are now limited to only another 1 meter of fresh snow for measurements.

Please rember, we are now 1. of May and Camping season isn't open yet!
Sure, some carvers prefere now more to prepare their stuff for next season for gliding over artifical snow and/or stones in early winter 2009/2010. There is also works in the garden, refilling swimming pools or what else.

As an authentic snowboarder I prefer more then prepairing boards and boots, to go snowboarding on nice, deep powdersnow. There was a fresh amount of +200 cm (plus two hundred cm) the last days and an averall snowhigh of 630 cm on the top of the mountain. So the blue sky and opened lifts are calling me, to ride on a soft layer of all white gold - nothing else than a guaranteed basic demand of any authentic snowboarders in Switzerland.

Nice pictures guys! This is a never ending winter! 8)

What is always surprising is to realize that, these days, the position of the sun in the sky and the day duration are the same as what we have on August! 8O

Indeed, if you take 21st June as a reference (because it's the solstice), then the 21st April is quasi-similar to 21st August. The 1st May is similar to 11th August! 8O Similar about the sun radiance, not the temperatures of course (there is a big thermal inertia in nature).

So the sun radiance is destructing the snow quickly. To find very good snow and fresh powder, one has to go above 3000 m and on the north faces!

Some extreme skiers and snowboarders love May to ride very steep north faces on famous mountains. The snow is good late morning and holds better than during cold winter (less avalanche risks). Many rocks and stones are covered, as well as the glacier cracks. :silly:

For to imagine what Patrice is talking about, see picture below! This was the entry for a nice north face powder field from Yesterday (Photo from: 4 p.m.). But for start there, people should feel comfy to take a lift downwards for two floors, whitout beeing in a lift-cabin!

Yes, the sun is a high risk. Full protection against the extreme hard and long time of UV-radiation is essential! (also for the special Zylon snowboards) The sun is high on sky, when lifts starts to work and even when they stop working. But that gives You a exceptional good sight for high speed riding the whole day!

What a hell are You doing pokkies?
Eleven long boards and only one tiny wax-iron!
On this way You wouldn't find enough time for to go snowboarding.
Please watch out the usefull tool "Wachsprofi 350" from Ski-Man. Gliding the board one time over this waxing machine and Your boards will be waxed, without a huge loss of wax, which should be scraped away after waxing.

Just do it like all the Swedish freeriders Yesterday on their extra wide skis! They enjoy to glide first on powder-snow and in the afternoon at lower areas on deep slush on well waxed skis!
Spring time is the most amazing time for doing wintersport. So Yesterday more then 50% of all skiers are riding with wide shaped skis from every well known brand and also from many small ski manufactors like e.g. Amplid, Voilé, www.birdos.com , http://www.powderequipment.de and so on.

- - - -

Yes kurtsk8, Italians should be the most lucky wintersport peoples now. But they should open the closed skiareas now as an exeption for one good Year of snow and not the passes for the Giro d'Italia, which starts in less then a week!

@crack676
That's great, I didn't know they are open now. Beside that, price was forced to increase last Years at Engstligen? SFr. 47.- for 1 small cablecar and 2 T-bat skilifts is verry expensive! I remeber me to pay SFr. 36.- for Engstligen for a liftticket a day. Beside that, for the amount of SFr. 32.- both skilift of Kuonisbärgli and the famous skilift Boden-Fleckli (not more active) was great to ride. The single-person skilift Boden-Fleckli was serving about 545 m of high, giving a continous steepnes of 28° !! in mean for riding downhill!
