 yes, that's true. Had a motorcycle accident in 1996, had my L3-bone (i.e. lumbar vertebra 3 according to my english dictionary) and two intervertebral disks replaced by some very impressive titanium thing, paused snowboarding for one season and then started again. Had surprisingly little problems with pain but bending down to close the binding was nearly impossible because my backbone is completely stiff from L2 to L4 so I switched to a step-in system.
Surprisingly snowboarding is better than skiing. Ok, after a full day I need some schnaps to get rid of the pain but that's the price you've gotta pay anyway for doing stupid things in your youth
So what about your knee?

Ok I know this is not a forum to discuss little injuries and itches but since we're all old men (and women of course) according to some poll I read a few weeks ago such things will become more and more important in the years to come...

Changing Springs

Post by rcrobar » Wednesday 23 February 2005, 18:34

Hi Harald

Nice to hear from you.
Harald wrote:Have you tried to compensate for stiffer tongue with softer springs on cold days? I wonder to substitute the yellow below the blue with a red one in same length when it feels difficult to bend the legs sufficiently.
I haven’t tried different springs at different temperatures yet, but this has crossed my mind. I can’t bring myself to cut the tongue on my NW’s, as their is no going back if I don’t like it. I think your idea of testing different springs is a good one. I may try using different springs in different snow conditions as well. Soft snow on a warm day springs vs hard snow on a cold day spring set up.

I guess the bottom line is the boots and bindings need to let you move the way you want to move, without feeling restricted. At the same time you want the boots and bindings to support a hard turn. This seems to be quite a balancing act, one that an apprentice like myself is still learning about.

Let us all know how your spring testing goes.

Cheers
Rob

I've been putting an old pair of soft Raichle tongue on the Northwave, which does not seem to be so affected by temperature. The springs do not seem to be affected at all by temperature.
So it has been working out OK to +5 to -25C. The tongue is the limiting factor.
It would have been nice to have that in the first place, without having to put a different tongue.

Stiff tongue Northwaves 900, ask for picture????

Post by Hans » Wednesday 23 February 2005, 20:07

I tried my new Northwaves .900 for the first time this year with temps of
around - 9 C. After three days my shins were sore as hell. I couldn't stand the pain anymore due to the very stiff boots. So I went for my soft setup the next four days of my winterholiday. Pitty I couldn't board my SWOARD anymore.

Patrice, Nils or Jaques or others what are your experiences with the stiffness of the Northwaves in the (very) cold. And even so what are your solutions? (I used all springs (red, yellow, blue and green) even no springs at all but the stiffness remained in the cold).

May be some pictures?

Greets, Hans.

well we got your email on the subject ;) and no answer meant we have no answer hehe :)
Yes the plastic gets a bit stiffer in the cold, but it is still very comfortable for me!
I guess maybe using a softer tongue would help... but no idea

Nils, you should add you have modified your tongue with neoprene stick .
Maybe Hans pain is not due to stiffness but to tongue shape, which is not according to his shins.

funny...

This is a nice thread... as it shows, how snowboarding comes down to preferences.

I did not change the springs of my Nortwaves. Yes, they are quite stiff, at the upper limit of stiffness for my some 68 Kgs. But I feel, as they are the same on all sizes, they should be ridiculously soft for a guy in the upper 80s, 90s, ... I like them as they are, because I feel I need a lot of support of my ancles. I feel insecure, when they can be bent too much.

On very could days like at the ECS I feel, that my boots are too stiff, because the shell / tongue becomes stiffer. They still work, when I'm on 100%, but I'm not as smooth as I should be in the flats. So I started thinking about softer Springs. Not for EC, but for very could days and maybe some kind of recreational mode ;).

At this time I'm looking for a second pair of NWs, mainly as a spare parts reservoir. As soon, as I find them, I will try to cut the tongue of my .900s. Maybe this, combined with a slightly softer Spring will lead to a perfect setup in every condition...

Hi, Arnaud and Nils

What's that about a neoprene stick? Is Nils holding back  some important information?

Hey!

I have a pair of Blax Stratos boots and I am going to modify them.

Can someone send me the needed parts for the spring sistem?

I can understand many languages and french is not one of them

Got my boots back!

Arnaud can you please give me a quick tutorial in english which parts are needed for the conversion and what kind of springs I need

PS. If you can get the .900 data I can ask if they would make it in Alpina.

Sorry, there's a 7-8 pages topic in the french forum about the changes you can make on the Stratos. It's illustrated with pics. Even if you don't understand french, you can have a quite accurate idea about what to do.

True...

figured out most of it and can make the sistem by myself but all the feedback is hidden in french

I have the parts and looks like I will be guessing which springs are best for me.

PS. I dont have the "flaps" on my Blax stratos....are they usefull or not? I see there was a discussion bout that.
