Carving spots

Post by Evgeny » Tuesday 23 November 2004, 15:49

Hi.

I'm planning my season now and looking for good places in Austria to go. I have been to Kaprun, Soelden has been referred here a few times, what options a carver has apart from those? What about Ischgl?

Thank You for any input.

The spot I personally like most is pretty much unknown outside Austria: Dienten/Mühlbach am Hochkönig, which is in the province of Salzburg, northeast of Kaprun. It's kind of a secret spot even for skiers, so you've got lots of space for carving and rather cheap accomodation, but absolutely no nightlife. Wide slopes, some of them very fine for carving. Unfortunately hardly any carvers there.
Goes from 800 m to about 2000 m above sealevel, thf. much lower than Sölden or Ischgl, but normally lots of snow compared to other resorts at this level.
If you're going during the main season, it would be a good alternative, but check out for snow situation.

Dienten and so on

Hi, Frunobulax

Interesting, do you have some links about this secret spot?? (since I go to Schladming/Haus/Rohrmoos the last four years).

Greets, Hans.

www.hochkoenig.at

I cannot really compare Hochkoenig with spots like Sölden or Ischgl because honestly I've never been there. But I prefer Hochkoenig to Schladming (where I've been quite often). I'd say it's a bit smaller than Schladming (if you include Haus and Reiteralm) but big enough for a week.
Biggest advantage is that it's less crowded. For example, from Dienten, the "central village", there's only a simple ski tow (ok, not too great an advantage for us snowboarders) to one side and a two person chair-lift to the other, but I never had to wait longer than 10 min, even on an Sunday in February. And less people on the lift means less people on the slope.

Disadvantages: No nightlife whatsoever, at least in Dienten. Poor freeriding possibilities, but who cares? Lift prices same level as in the rest of province Salzburg, i.e. very high. Many dutch tourists

Hi Evgeny,

Two weeks ago, I've been in Suedtirol (I) at the Kronplatz http://www.kronplatz.org for two days of training and I liked it very much. The snow was mostly artificial still, but very good - I loved riding my GS board over there. The Kronplatz is like one mountain peak with descends on (almost) every side. Unfortunately, two days were too short...
You can also visit the Tomahawk shop if you're there ;-)

Grtz,

Erwin

I've been in Kronplatz several times and it is highly recommenting for carving.
Has a lot of wide and well groomed slopes but if you are planning to go on holidays be prepeard to wake up early to avoid the crowds.
The place to live is St.Vigilio although there is not so many things to do there but is right next to the slopes.
If you like to hang arount look for Bruneck or Olang.
I've heard that Val Gardena and Corvara which they are very close to Kronplatz have very good slopes for carving.

Hi,

Last february I went to Wolkenstein, Italy. There are a lot of pistes around the Sella Ronda which are very nice to carve! Wide, blue and red pistes.
Furthermore, AND very welcome, the capuccino prices were very ok 8)
