Tirols garden of Eden is melting away!

Post by Schneewurm » Tuesday 27 April 2010, 8:05

The drama of melting ice and snow on Glaciers is still on progress.
Last summer (2009) most of e.g. Austrian Glaciers melted about 12.5 % more then a Year before.

Leading and 6 out of the top-ten of all the melting Glaciers are located at the Ötztaler alps. Thats where You can find e.g. Sölden ski-resort.

See pictures below from Kesselwand-Glacier (-44,4 meters/2009). Kesselwand-Glacier is right south of Sölden. Kesselwand-Glacier join the bigest one, the Gepatsch Glacier, which went down extreme the last century.

And take a look to the missing rainfall or snowfall of actual April. April is usualy best month of Year for to go powder-snowboarding, but by only a third to a tenth of precipitation this April wasn't good for powdersnowboarding again and feeding Glaciers is missing.

Well, after another 24 Years, choosing between two paradises for snowboarding in Europe turns realy to the fabulous world. (or You will get Your awesome carving-experience at snowdome in Glasgow, or on a snow-hall on Rettenbach - with nice mountain-view behind windows.)

Russia could became a host of desperate skiers and snowboarders. We have some not developed skiing spots in Siberia, so it`s time to foreign investors start negotiations with our government to develop something there...Or this will be too late and expensive..

But anyway - sad news.

unluckily, that's the same all over alps ... I have been in Valtellina over the last 22 years, the melting of glaciers, even following incredibly snowy seasons like the 2008/2009 one is impressive ...

and Valtellina wasn't at poor snow amount for season 09/10 too!

Yes, melting of glaciers on the alps is in progress, up to 1500 m of lenght in a Year, see also here!

If skiing/snowboarding will be limited, it's not realy a problem. The big problem of the future will be the lack of water on lower areas during summer time.

Yes of course starikashka, some decades in future everyone dreams about Simnaja Skazka!

Sad news for whole Ötztaler alps. Scientist forcast a rise of temperature of about 4-8° for 2100 on these alps. After some Years of +5° Ötztaler alps will be free of any Glaciers! Ötztaler alps are heated more then other alps. WWF talk about +3° at the Year 2040. At lower area, like e.g. Insbruck temperature rise only about +1.5°.
