The snow is finally there in the Alps

Post by fivat » Saturday 9 December 2006, 9:41

Saturday 9th December, 9:15 am.

Last night it has finally snowed a lot in the Alps. Yahooo! :silly: Look at this picture taken from the Webcam in Zinal village:

A friend of mine, in Verbier, tells me by SMS that there is 60cm of fresh snow at 2700m! :D

Prepare you boards, most of the resorts open on 16th December!

No snow, but what is the fuss, it's all commerce.

Post by Hans » Saturday 16 December 2006, 0:16

Don't know what all the fuss is about overhere in Europe. People (commerce) are complaining that there is no snow, but if my memory isn't lost, I can remember several seasons that we had no snow with Christmas. Only the temperature is higher like never before now, that's the only difference. But it's all about commerce and money these days. Commerce is making us crazy. We are just spoiled the last years with snow early November!

Yeah, I was just looking back at the megeve snowfall figures: Last time we had a winter with no snow in October and November, we only had 20cm in December, but then 5.7m combined January-March...

I've seen several years where we opened with no snow at base, the problem this year is that without cannons, conditions are currently barely skiable at 2000m, and that's without yesterday's rain. Not looking like a good Christma / New Year for the smaller resorts unless it starts snowing pretty damn soon.

Hi,
If your consider Norway to be part of Europe there are good conditions in many of the mountain ski resorts in Southern Norway such as Hemsedal, Kvitfjell (World Cup arena), Trysil, Geilo, Röldal (powder and off-piste).

Snow

Post by patmoore » Wednesday 3 January 2007, 5:05

It's grim over on our side of the pond. Temperatures are near all time highs and the only precipitation we get is rain. We've only had one minor snowfall in Vermont all season and it's frequently too warm to make snow.

I'll be in Davos February 10-17. I understand conditions in Switzerland aren't particularly good either. I sure hope winter puts in an appearance soon!
