Advanced Torsion Control Matrix (ATC Matrix)

The ATC Matrix defines our torsional stiffness control system (torsion = twisting). This technology creates performance characteristics that are unique to our snowboards.

Torsional stiffness is a key parameter in determining a snowboards overall performance. The majority of the stiffness in the longitudinal flex or flexion, which is the tip to tail bending, is transferred to the effective edge via the torsional stiffness. It is largely responsible for the board's ability to grip and it provides the feeling of whether or not a board is able to cut through the snow. Thus, it requires the highest attention.

One of the most difficult conceptual challenges, that today's ski and snowboard industries face, is the ability to master this parameter. Unlike the longitudinal flex, which is easy to control through simple variations of a core thickness, torsional stiffness requires a much more sophisticated design configuration.

The ATC Matrix is a new concept and invention that is the result of years of research and development (1992 up until today). It is unlike anything that has been done in the industry during the past several years.

This very sophisticated device allows us to master accurately the distribution of torsional stiffness. The highlight of this technology is that it has little or no effect on the longitudinal flex of the board. Both parameters, flexion and torsion, can be separately adjusted, which authorizes unprecedented combinations of flexion and torsion.

In addition, the ATC Matrix configuration dramatically reduces any local edge warps. Often a board will bend or buckle in a "V" pattern, just in front of the front foot, when hitting difficult snow conditions. The ATC Matrix system forces the edge to bend in an even arc; extreme pressures, transmitted by the bindings, are forced to spread out homogeneously along the entire effective edge.

The ATC Matrix system is composed of several carbon fiber parts that are incorporated into a very high quality wood core. They stiffen targeted areas of the board such that when the board is under strain, it is forced to bend according to a defined geometry. As a result the board is "captive" of this "matrix".

2D version:

The original ATC Matrix, used in the first generation of the Extremecarver, has stood the test of time, contributing to the swift success of SWOARD. We have continued to develop and perfect this device. This has led to the ATC Matrix 2D and to the famous Extremecarver 2D model. Future improvements to the ATC system are possible because our shaper-extremecarver Jacques Rilliet has always new ideas.

The benefits of the ATC Matrix device are:

  • Very high stability with uncompromising maneuverability. The board is a true all-round performer.
  • Superior edge pressure resulting in enhanced grip. It is easier to carve a turn, irrespective of the snow conditions.
  • A carving accuracy that makes one feel like one is gliding on a thin line.
  • A smooth ride is created in a variety of conditions. The board is able to slice through uneven terrain, making the slope feel better.
  • An incredible gliding ability, thanks to the homogeneous edge-snow pressure.
  • An exhilarating and lively ride.
  • The integrity of the camber is maintained, which helps to maintain the board's performance throughout its lifetime.

The ATC Matrix system has made extremecarving, as we are practicing it, possible: it is the key to our snowboards performance. Each improvement, to our system, allows us to push our limits a little bit further.
