New home made RAB

Post by Simon » Monday 28 November 2005, 20:13

Hello EC’ers,

I spent a few hours on the milling machine and that's the result:

a new RAB called SAB (Simon's Acceleration Box)

The main part is made of aluminium and fixed on the boot with the standard pin and two additional screws, the part that holds the springs is screwed on and is on a different position on front and back foot. The spring for foreward lean mesures 16 x 8 x 76 with a spring rate of 18N/mm. The back spring is 12.5 x 6.3 x 38 with 13.6N/mm. The rod slides in a teflon bushing and the preload of the foreward spring is adjustable. (perhaps I add a nut to preload the back spring too)

The advantages of this SAB are the spring for the back lean and the design that shortens the boot.

It's not tested on the snow, perhaps the spring rates have to be changed.

feel free to copy

Simon

That looks very professional :clap2: :pray2:
Could you shoot two side pics which shows how whole adjustment looks when
-boot is non-flexed position and
- boot is heavily flexed

Thanks, that kind pic i was looking for both positions, great.
But why that "normal" position" is so much more front flexed than on original ? Just setup perhaps ?

there are two reasons:
on the pic the boot with the new system is a rear boot und the old is a front boot and I don't ride the same setup front / back. second if the buckles of the "old" are closed the RAB isn't at its end position anymore. and the "new" goes back as far as the "old", but spring controlled. hope it's clear

Simon, Very puuurrty ("pretty" in real english :) )...
Where did you get the springs? I found some places but they involve minimum purchases so I had to get a few more springs than I need. Thanks.

GREAT WORK !!! really !!!
beside that your pic´s brought up a question: I have noticed some "stuff" around the shell of the orange boot. It is visibile in the side pic´s. Do you aplly wax / grease or similar stuff so that that two parts of the shell glide better.

I´ve seen this before in other pics of boots. I noticed that my own Indy´s flex not really easy, even without any springs attached. So I´m just curios if these RAB/SAB mod´s are worth the effort if the boot itself doesn´t flex at all.

Sure they look cool, but after using the Indy for one season now I think that probably a less stiffer bootshell would have been the better choice.

I would appreciate your comment on this.

@ kelvin o
I get the springs from Brütsch/Rüegger AG, a swiss shop, http://www.b-r.ch

@ utzel
this stuff around the orange boot is silicone, it's only fixed on the upper shell and seals the gap between upper and lower shell. In addition the gliding parts are treated with silicon spray, but this boot moves easily anyway.
Does your boot not flex without spring or without RAB? Indy with standard RAB does not work, the RAB itself (without spring) blocks the boot by minimal movement. Have you tried this 5 position part in walk mode, as mounted on suzuka? If then the boot feels too soft, a modified RAB is worth, otherwise you definitely need a softer boot or a softer tongue.

@ The Blitz
order? sorry, I don't have the time to machine these parts? but I can give you the CAD drawings?

Hi,
The system looks really nice. However, I discussed with Patrice and Jacques the functioning of the springs last winter. The reason for shortening the yellow spring (the hardest) under the bolt was to restrict the backward movement in order to prevent falling too far backwards. Maybe the green spring is to soft and long, but testing on snow will give some answers to that.

Simon, why are you teasing us with such a fine product if you are not willing to manufacture it in large scale.... :alien:

Otherwise I think you have done a great job, it's almost a piece of art. Congrats! :clap2: :pray2:  :clap3: :bravo:

Cheers,

István
