Your comments on my backside please!
Hi!
I would like to ask the laid down curve guys /girls for why my backside isn't running well. With only one visit to the Swoard event in Zinal, I've been mostly following advice from the site.
I hope this link works.
Feel free to be honest. I can take it.
I think myself that I take the curve too tight and that I need to sit further down.
I'm not concerned on the front side as I can do it like the picture below.
Many thanks in advance for your help. I still have a month of boarding to go in the south of Spain.

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
I think you should find a way to get on the edge earlier in the backside turn.
The problem with getting on the edge to late is that you get a lot of pressure on the board at the same time. The board can't handle that much pressure at once and will start sliding or bumping.
Think about your frontside turn, in this turn you are on the edge of your board from the begin of the turn and the pressure looks nice.
So after the frontside turn, go a little uphill and then start the backside turn on the edge from the beginning. Don't try to lay down immediately, first try making a smooth carve.
Any other comments? I'm curious if I missed something here.

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
In my opinion and besides the advice of nicander: as frontside you have to go to the ground voluntarily. Do not hope that the centrifugal force to make everything for your place. You have to put your left hip on the snow.

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
Thanks Nicander and Alex. Food for thought and training. I will post another video where I lean further to the snow on the backside and I have the typical tac-tac-tac experience and fall down.
While I really try to lean on my rear foot before getting into the backside, I quickly lean forward again in the curve. I guess a legacy of 20 years boarding......

Hola
Rotation, rotation, rotation....
1. training non EC with arms crossed, or glued to your sides > you need to train your body not to use the arms..the rotation will start from the shoulders, and it will pull the rest of the body into turning providing you are "locked" at the hips ( tight )
2. after you pick up confidence, use the rotation combined with the push pull technique...see what it does.
3. Go uphill before each turn and initiate turns while board is still going upwards hill: SMOOTHNESS is the rule, especially backside
4. add angulation each time until you reach EC level

You are carving nice .
Nils told everything you need to do.
You should also keep your upper body up - not to drop it onto your knee and work with your legs (push & pull).
Cheers,
Matti

Very nice rider! I prefer your front side turn but following the advice of the chat will improve also the curve in back! Enjoy

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
Hola Wouter!
Make shure that you can flex your knees to 90 degrees. Don't straighten your legs when you travel between turns. When you exit from the frontside, keep your legs bent (90 degrees) and enter the backside from this low position. This will help you to start your turns earlier. Your legs shoud be extended only while you push in laid turns.

Hi everybody. A week went by and I did some training all Saturday based on your advise.
Boarding it felt much, much better, especially when turning up before setting in the curve. I actually touched the snow at every backside turn.
However, when I see myself back in the video, I hardly see any improvement
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
you're getting there, it needs time and try, try, try
regarding your latest video, i would refer to the first 2 points listed by Nils https://www.extremecarving.com/forum/vie ... 51#p126851
and the "rotation, rotation"
don't try to pick up everything at once, you'll be to busy in the turn thinking about everything that needs to be done
start with the rotation practice, after that pick up point 1 and practice that for a while up to the point where it's almost automatic for you to do and then continue to the next point

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
Thanks Manu.
I started the day doing point 1 as I'm an obedient learner. That works.
I have the feeling I make the first half of the backside turn way too fast when compared to the second half. Also I believe I lack a lot of push-pull. Maybe I should also make the distance in between curves shorter to better use the force coming out of the front side and turn further upwards.
Either way, this isn't an easy piste and it's at 3.000 mtr so one gets pretty tired. On Saturday I'm there again. I won't give up.

Re: Your comments on my backside please!
Hi Wouter,
one thing first: you are nicely on the edge of the board, i.e. you are carving and not drifting.
second: never mind, the backside is a hard thing to learn. You have to get some trust in your board first. I also started doing push pull very deep in the beginning, which wasn't too bad actually. Here's one thing you should also try, because rotation is in my opinion the key. Try to get a slope which is not as steep as the one you're riding on the video.
Here are two videos, which might help. On the first and second you don't see any Laydown on the backside, but there's lots of rotation. If you noticed: even though there's no laydown, Petr, the rider is very deep to the ground. From there it's only tiny step to the BS-laydown.
The third video shows some good exercise: after you tried to do the Letdown, keep the body position, try to lie down without riding, just to save the position of your body.
Keep on trying and making movies. This is very important, because what you feel while riding is totally different to what you're actually doing.
